How to watch live TV on your iPad/iPhone/iPod?

Want to watch live TV broadcasts in high definition on your iPad, iPod touch, iPhone or other mobile devices without installing hardware like Boxee or Slingbox?
If you have a TBS digital TV tuner then it’s possible to stream signal direct and watch live TV to your iPod, iPhone or iPad, wherever you are. In this article we’ll show you how to do it for free. Remember that streaming TV over the Internet can quickly eat up your mobile data allowance, so bear this in mind when using it.

Tools you need

TBS digital TV tuner card, this can be satellite (DVB-S), cable (DVB-C) or terrestrial (DVB-T), depending on what signal you have.You can buy these cards on our buydvb online shop :
DVB-S2/S PCIe TV Tuner Card: TBS6925, TBS6984 quad tuner, TBS6928 TV tuner with CI slot
DVB-S2/S USB TV Qbox: TBS 5925 TV Box, TBS5980 USB DVB S2 TV QBox CI
DVB-T2/T PCIe TV Tuner Card: TBS6284 quad tuner card, TBS6280 dual tuner
Here we use TBS 6925 DVB-S2 PCIe TV Tuner as example:
In order to stream the signal over the Internet you’ll need to download a free media centre app called MediaPortal, along with a free plug-in called iPiMP. Make sure you download version 5.2.0.821 of iPiMP from the Downloads list.

Install MediaPortal

Double-click MediaPortal_Setup_1.2.1_FINAL, clicking Yes when prompted. Wait for files to be unpacked, then work your way through the setup wizard, clicking Next between each step.
Start by leaving English (United States) selected, then choose ‘Start with the installation now’ followed by ‘Yes — I will use MediaPortal to watch TV’.
Leave ‘Perform a One Click Installaton’ selected and click Next followed by Install. Then wait while each component is installed as required. Once complete, click Exit to finish.

Scan for TV channels

Your TV tuner TBS6925 should already be plugged in and the drivers installed for it. Double-click the TV-Server Configuration desktop shortcut and click Yes if prompted to get started.
Expand TV Servers > Computer Name > your TV Tuner (typically beginning ‘DVB-S’). Select UK under Country, then locate your local TV transmitter from the Region/Provider drop-down menu. If you don’t know what it is, select ‘All Regions’ before clicking Scan for channels.
MediaPortal will now scan for available channels. The Status window will alert you when new channels have been found.

Configure and test channels

When ‘Scan done’ appears, select TV Channels in the left-hand pane to view all available channels. Remove those channels you have no interest in by pressing Ctrl on the keyboard and clicking each one in turn; then right-click and choose ‘Delete this channel’, followed by Yes when prompted.

Once you’ve chosen your channels, verify that the card is working properly by selecting a channel, clicking the Preview button and then waiting. After some delay a pop-up window displaying the channel should appear.

Troubleshoot card problems

If the channel doesn’t show, or you get an error message, you’ll need to tweak the card settings. Expand TV Servers and click on your computer’s name from the list. Select your card in the right-hand pane and click Edit to tweak its settings.
Make sure ‘Stop card’ rather than ‘Pause card’ is selected, and try changing ‘Preferred network provider’ from Generic to DVB-S before clicking Save and trying the Preview button again.

Configure electronic programme guide

Next, select DVB EPG from the left-hand menu, wait if prompted and then verify that Enabled is ticked under ‘EPG grabbing when idle’. Expand DVB EPG and select ‘TV EPG grabber’. Click All under the channel list, then tick English.

Recording preferences

If you plan to record TV shows to watch at your convenience, select the Recording section to configure the recording process.
Use the General tab to determine when a recording begins and ends (by default it begins 7 minutes before a show is due to start and ends 10 minutes after its scheduled finish).
Verify where your recorded programmes will be saved from the Folder tab (make sure the correct card is selected from the drop-down menu or click ‘Same recording folder for all cards’).
The Disk Quota tab allows you to reserve drive space by deleting old recordings when free space drops below a certain level.

Install iPiMP

When you’re done configuring MediaPortal, click OK followed by Yes to restart the service.
Now double-click the MediaPortal Configuration desktop shortcut. Leave Standard selected and click Continue followed by OK to create folders necessary for iPiMP to install correctly.
Now double-click the iPiMP setup file you downloaded earlier, clicking Run followed by Yes or Continue if prompted. Click Next followed by Yes, select I Agree and then tick ‘Singleseat installation’ before clicking Next again.
Type 85 into the ‘Enter the TCP port to listen on’ box and click Next twice. Click Browse to choose a suitable folder in which to store the files iPiMP converts in order to allow you to watch live TV, then click Next, followed by Yes and Install. When finished, click Exit and restart your PC.

Set up remote access

Next, you need to assign the computer running MediaPortal a static IP address. Once done, you then need to configure a port on your router to allow your mobile devices to access your TV signal outside of your home network — consult your router’s documentation or visit Port Forward for guides to specific models.
Once logged into your router’s configuration utility — typically through your browser — locate the Port Forwarding section, then enter 85 into the Port From and To boxes, plus the static IP address you just created for the computer running MediaPortal.

Access from your ipad

While connected to your home network on your phone, browse to whatsmyip.com and make a note of your public IP address. Now test your connection by disconnecting from your home network and switching to your mobile broadband Internet connection. Type http://1.2.3.4:85 into your web browser, where 1.2.3.4 is the public IP address you just made a note of.

If everything has been set up correctly you’ll be prompted for a username and password. Enter ‘admin’ for both and tap the blue Login button.

Watch live TV on iPad

Start by changing your login details for security — do so by tapping Administration followed by Change Password.
You’re now ready to watch live TV or schedule recordings to watch later. Tap the Home button, then select TV Guide > All Channels and pick a channel from the list. A ‘Now and Next’ EPG will be displayed for that channel.
Click Stream to watch live television — it’ll take a short period of time, but a countdown will commence that, when finished, reveals options for playing and stopping the broadcast.

Click Play to view the TV channel in a new browser window. Once complete, click done, close the window and then click Stop to free up the TV tuner to watch another channel.

Dish and Blockbuster to introduce Netflix competitor Friday

From: venturebeat.com
Satellite TV operator Dish Network will announce a new Blockbuster-branded all-you-can-watch video streaming service on Friday, according to a CNNMoney report.

The move for Dish to create a Netflix rival is hardly surprising. Dish acquired Blockbuster in a bankruptcy auction for $320 million back in April and a month later Dish CEO Joe Clayton said he wanted to “take a small piece of the pie from Netflix” when it came to streaming video.

This seems an opportune time to announce a rival, as Netflix — the leader in streaming movies — is hurting when it comes to consumer sentiment. First, the company instituted a 60 percent price hike on combined streaming and physical DVD rental plans at the beginning of September. Second, the company just announced that it will spin off its physical DVD rental service into a new company called Qwikster. Netflix customers were angry with the changes, so Dish already has a group of potential users it can easily court if it offers a cheaper price for comparable content.

Dish is also one of the companies said to be bidding for streaming service Hulu, alongside the likes of Amazon, Yahoo and Google. If the company were to control Hulu on top of its Blockbuster DVD-and-streaming plans and Dish at-home service, it would easily become an entertainment powerhouse in its own right.

Dish Network did not immediately respond to questions we had about the new service.

However, some excellent or amazing tv channels need pay monthly fees. So how to watch digital satellite pay TV on PC would be a topic that many satellite hobbyists and hunters are interested. Firstly, watching satellite digital TV on your computer requires a DVB S2 card, Smart Card, CAM. It seems a little complex, but it is worthy you doing that. Finding a suitable DVB s2 card would save a lot of time and money when encrypting the Pay TV. Now we would introduce a several DVB S2 cards with CI. All of them will allow you enjoy digital DVB S2 satellite HDTV pay TV channels.

TBS 5980 USB DVB S2 TV QBox CI

The TBS 5980 USB DVB S/S2 TV Qbox CI is fully compliant with DVB-S and DVB-S2 broadcasting standards. With built in CI module, you need open your desktop and insert your subscription card directly. It works perfectly with Window Media Center, Linux MythTV and other DVB applications.

AnySee E7-S2 DVB-S/S2 USB TV Box with CI

DVB-S2 USB box with built in CI module, This is another excellent DVB S2 CI card. No need for full height PC cases or having to go at the back of your PC to insert your subscription card, you can even use it with a laptop. Enjoy scrambled high-definition quality satellite channels by inserting a CAM and smart card.A C-Band or Ku-Band satellite dish with LNB is required. To view Pay TV channels, you need a compatible CAM and subscriber card.

NetUP PCIe DVB S2 Dual DVB-S2-CI

The NetUP Dual DVB-S2-CI is a professional DVB-S/DVB-S2 PCI-e card designed for high-density appliances such as DVB-IP gateways, home theaters, satellite Internet systems, etc. In contrast to standard DVB-S cards, NetUP’s Dual DVB-S2-CI provides fourfold density – two DVB-S/S2 receivers and two Common Interface (CI) slots occupy only one PCI-e slot. The high density allows saving space on installation and using the card for satellite signal reception in confined environments. For example, a standard 1U rack-mount server with two PCI-e slots can receive and fully decode 4 satellite transponders, such as NetUP’s IPTV Combine 4x or DVB-IP gateway 4x

AzureWave DVB-S2 CI PCI Card

The AD-SP400 DVB-S2 CI card is a DVB s2 card with PCI slot. It supports low profile and low setup computer. There is a common interface on the right side f the card.A C-Band or Ku-Band satellite dish with LNB is required. To view Pay TV channels, you need a compatible CAM and subscriber card. However, until now SelectTV and Aurora services using Irdeto I/II CAMs are known to work with this device. Other CAMs are still waiting for test.

Please note these DVB-S devices rely on an appropriate CAM and official subscription cards to descramble PayTV services. As the PayTV providers may make changes to the encryption system or the format of the material broadcast, so please make sure the DVB S/S2 TV card if are well compatible with the functionality of these devices with any PayTV services. Notwithstanding anything anywhere else said, these devices are therefore only guaranteed to work with un-encrypted services.

There are much kind of TV tuner cards available in the market. Such as DVB S2 card, DVB T2 card, DVB C card, analogue TV card etc. Now today we will introduce a new DVB T tuner card which is specially designed for receiving freeview channels in UK. Unlike other countries in Europe, most of UK locals get feeview TV. You might know freeview, you may be not know DVB T( digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial). In another word, Freeview , Freeview+, Freeview HD is transmitted as DVB T/T2 standard. So if you want to get freeview TV, you might need a DVB T tuner card, rather than DVB S or DBV C card.

The TBS 6280 DVB T dual TV tuner card is a Freeview tuner card with PCI express slot. It supports dual tuners receiving with digital terrestrial television including both DVB-T and DVB-T2 standard, Giving 2 simultaneous HD terrestrial streaming from a single low profile card. All Freeview digital terrestrial (DVB-T & T2) TV and radio channels can be received by this Freeview HD tv card.

The manufacturers include a small portable aerial with the DVB T2 tuner. However, how good these mini antennae are at picking up a solid signal depends on the coverage where you live. When we connected the TBS 6280 is a great freeview HD tuner to a proper aerial on the roof we found an impressive total of 70 TV and radio stations. Switching to a tiny indoor antenna that was packaged with DVB-T tuner, Placing the tidily antenna on the outside window sill we did far better, picking up 26 channels including such as BBC HD, channel 4 ,ITV, EPSN, CNN. There wasn’t a single TV station that we would choose to watch and the radio selection is good too.

The good news is that TBS 6280 is ideal for Windows 7 Media Center, MythTV Linux ubuntu and other high end PVR DVB applications. The latest Linux driver works well with terrestrial DVB-T2 reception, It is a good DVB T card for linux and MythTV supporting.

Software

Every TV tuner comes with some sort of software to allow you to scan for stations, save favorite broadcasters, and schedule recordings DVR-style. TBS 6280 DVB T2 card comes with the compatible drivers for windows and Linux. It also contains some DVB applications, such as progdvb, TBSviewer,DVBviewer. You’ll be able to scan for channels, watch TV, pause and record from the comfort of your sofa with the added bonus of the interface on the screen and a decent remote control. On top of that you can expect that your tuner will come with a seven-day Electronic Programme Guide (EPG)in Freeview list.

About Price

£103 is a reasonable price for a dual tuner card. Each tuner cost less than £ 55. It is so pleased to see the performance is great. Compared to Blackgold BGT3510, TBS 6280 has Absolute price advantage. It would be a great potential DVB T2 product in the recent market, Especially for UK market.

How to watch Freeview HD TV on Windows7 Media Center

I have recently just built my new htpc and its working great, but i need to setup the TV tuner in order to watch freeview HD on windows media center.

Freeview
is the name for terrestrial digital television broadcasting in the UK and a new and simple way to watch digital TV programs without subscribing to any commercial operators and paying them a monthly subscription fee. It provides high picture and sound quality compared to the traditional analogue TV due to the digital transmission of TV signal not being easily interrupted during the course of transmission by other electromagnetic waves.

Freeview HD is the best-ever argument for the digital switchover. For the 50 per cent of the country that can currently pick them up, the high-definition channels from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and S4C are a razor-sharp, colour-saturated glimpse into the future. Just like standard-definition Freeview channels, the HD ones are terrestrial broadcasts and free to everyone.

This is a step by step guides you how to free watch Freeview HD TV on windows media center.

Required Materials

- Freeview HD TV Tuner
The Freeview HD TV tuner is the bit that allows you to connect your aerial to your computer.
- Aerial
You can either buy a separate aerial for your computer, or use your main TV aerial and just use a splitter.
- Coxial Cable
This will run from the wall aerial-plug to the tuner.

Installing Freeview HD TV tuner for Windows Media Center

Follow the instructions and you’re done, simply plug in your indoor aerial, scan for channels, and you should be getting FreeviewHD in no time!

Open up Windows Media Center, Go to Tasks -> settings -> TV -> TV Signal -> Set Up TV Signal. Then click TV -> live TV to watch the scanned Freeview TV programs.

How To Build Your Own IPTV-VoD System

It seems to be very mysterious to build the IPTV/ VoD. But setting up an IPTV network is very easy as long as you master some basic knowledge. IPTV networks are basically intranets, only the web browser isn't on a PC, it is on a set-top box. If you've set up an intranet or public website, you can set up your own IPTV network and do what you want with it. You don't need massive and expensive servers, specialized set-top boxes or overly large development teams working with complex software. With the right DVB hardware and software, it should take you less than a few hours.

Why to build your own IPTV

There are kind of people who might have interest in building IPTV.

* Create an internal TV system for training, advertising or information display;
* Create an IPTV showcase for your clients so they can visualise opportunities;
* Evaluate current IPTV technology without massive expense;
* Convert your existing client websites and applications to IPTV versions;
* Cross-train your web developers so they have IPTV skills;
* Build a great new idea or application that would work well on IPTV;
* Integrate your current web-based systems into an IPTV environment (e.g. VoIP)

What you'll need

* A TV
* An IP set-top box
* A multicast-capable router
* A web server
* A video server
* 2 x PLC Adaptors
* Sample video material

In this guide, we're going to use free open source software (FOSS) where we can. We'll also be adhering to open standards wherever possible. Our HTML screens and menus will be housed on an Apache web server running PHP, Perl, Python & MySQL, and our video will be encoded in MPEG-4 H.264 AVC, packaged in a simple MPEG-2 transport stream. We'll stream out our video with VLC and Helix Server.

1. Finding a new home for the kit
Luckily, your brand new shiny IPTV system won't need much space at all. The 2 PCs (web server and video server) can be hidden away under a desk, kept in a server room or tucked away under the stairs somewhere. Using PLC adaptors means you don't need cabling dangling around. What you will need is a space for demonstrating it on a TV. That could be on a desk, in reception or in a corner of the office with a couch.

2. Choosing the right set-top box
The most critical decision in setting up your system is what IP set-top box you will be using, as all of them run different software and have different capabilities. All of them connect to the TV using a standard scart cable or RCA sockets, and display PAL/NTSC video at standard resolution. It's preferable if they have a web-based control panel, but many have proprietary configuration screens or use simple telnet.

The most popular choice of software is an embedded web browser, which for all intents and purposes does the same thing as a PC web browser like IE, Firefox, Opera or Safari. The developer interface tends to be a mark-up language, usually HTML/Javascript. The main embedded client software programs in use on IP set-top boxes today are Fresco/Galio (from Ant Plc), Opera, Escape/Evo (from Espial) and Myrio (based on Espial). You can think of them of little web browser units.

In this guide, we will be using the CMS 1080 (from Complete Media Systems), running Ant Galio 2.0. The box itself supports video delivered in H.264 AVC or Windows Media. We will be using the former.

3. Setting up the network
IPTV runs over an IP network, which means it will work over your existing home or office Ethernet network. You'll probably already have a router or switch that your desktop PCs are plugged into, although it will be best to create a new, separate network for your TV as the traffic load is much higher than a normal data network designed for internet and/or LAN connectivity.

An IP set-top box is just another network client device. When it is connected to the IP network, it is assigned an IP address by DHCP just as a desktop PC would be (this can also be static). If your router doesn't act as a DHCP server, you don't have a network gateway or are experiencing problems with a crossover cable, simply download and install a free DHCP server from the internet onto your web server PC.

Your PLC (powerline communication) adaptors create an Ethernet network over existing electricity cabling, which avoids the need to have wiring everywhere when you can't use wireless. They generally come in pairs, and cost £100-200 from the high street, your ISP or online retailers. The first should be plugged into an AC plug near the router, and the second should be plugged in next to the set-top box. Both then have Ethernet sockets which you plug normal cat-5 cable into.

4. IPTV Streaming live broadcast video
The first thing to simulate on your IPTV system is live TV ,this can be done in two ways. The first is easy, the second is either painful or expensive. Live broadcast IPTV needs to be multicasted 24-7 over the IP network, as unicast is too inefficient. We will be IPTV streaming live TV from our video server.

For each channel, we need to broadcast a 5 minute looping pre-captured video clip to a multicast IP address. For this, we can use the free VLC player, or the industry standard WinSend, created by Pixstream. You can test if the stream is being correctly outputted by opening the same network stream with another copy of VLC on another computer on the network. Do this for as many channels as you require. Once they are broadcasting, the set-top box will be able to tune into the multicast stream just as VLC does.

The more advanced way to provide live broadcast TV (such as Freeview) over an IP network is to convert MPEG-2 video received from a DVB receiver (a TV tuner card, for example those made by TBS) into multicast format, which is known as IP encapsulation. Something I have to mention is that TBS 6984 quad tuner card is incredible amazing for IPTV providers. It allows you receive four different transponders at the same time.

5. Preparing VoD content
Making DVD quality video across your network is split into two separate parts – getting the video files into the right format, and secondly, setting them up to stream from a video server. The bad news is that there isn't a free or open source VoD server that you can use to exactly simulate what would happen in a commercial service.

Your video material will need to be pre-encoded in the same way the live multicast video is. Software encoders from vendors like Elecard, MainConcept Cyberlink and Nero will easily compress video from most formats (MPG, AVI, MOV etc) into MPEG 4 H.264 AVC, but they will additionally need to be encapsulated in an MPEG-2 transport stream for delivery over the network. The free open-source Media Coder program produces excellent results.

The main choices for serving video on-demand over our IPTV network are the open-source Helix Server and Darwin Streaming Server, both of which come in Windows flavour, but can also run on Linux. We also have a trial of the Elecard RTSP server that can also be run on either OS. If your own network is set up to use Windows Media, you can happily and easily unicast and/or multicast video from a Windows Server PC running the free Windows Media Server.

Once the video files have been pre-encoded, they need to be placed in the directory on the video server that has been allocated as the storage folder, as well as mirrored in the Apache web directory allocated on the web server. Almost all the RTSP servers have a web-based configuration panel and will need to index/identify each file for streaming. Once these are in place, test the RTSP capacity of the server by opening a network stream to them in VLC, and once any problems are corrected, your IP set-top box will play them using its in-built API.

6. Creating screens and menus
Menus for the TV screen are created in HTML, CSS and Javascript, just as normal web pages are, using the same standard tools (Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc). The software on the device is an ordinary web browser like IE, Firefox, Opera or Safari, and overlays the web pages you create on the screen through the scart cable (OSD). Most have full support for open standards and current technologies such as RSS and AJAX. Some also include the Macromedia Flash 6 player. It's a case of write, and then refresh the browser screen, just like normal web development.

Each set-top box's hardware is different, so there is a different Javascript API for each device model that must be obtained from the manufacturer. Video can be displayed and scaled as any kind of image on the page, and manipulated by normal Javascript functions. The set-IP will not come with any software applications pre-installed (or even commands on the remote to go back or refresh the screen), so the very first application you need to create is an electronic programmed guide (EPG) to navigate around your service and watch video streams.

Using HTML for menu and screen displays means content can be dynamically generated using a server-side process just like any web page. The TV screen displays whatever you send it, meaning you can integrate any type of web-based system into your new IPTV network, such as the Asterisk VoIP PBX, the Jabber IM server, multiplayer game servers, your own web application or an external XML API.

7. Showtime!
Once you have your network set up, its up to you to get creating menus and screens, and adding video content onto your video server that can be played back through the TV. The production procedure is exactly the same as it is for a website, only with TV-specific functionality and usability issues. Over a few days or weeks, you suddenly have an entire TV network to yourself that you can do anything to, just as when you have your own website that you can do anything with.

Influence Occurs on TBS 6981 When BBC HD Switchover

Recently BBC HD has switched to DVB-S2, and many users are worrying about if they will have problems in using their TBS products. One of the most popular TBS products in the UK should be the TBS 6981 PCIE DVB-S2 dual tuner card. It would be a terrible shock for British users if the TBS dual tuner tv card is not compatible with BBC HD channels. However, Tests are still ongoing, TBS is also trying to work out the best solution to make up this bug. Now just hear what the British users talk on TBS’s official forum.

One of the TBS 6981 user said that he got a ‘no signal’ error in 7mc when trying to watch the channels. Even though he had done a full transponder scan to no avail. While another user also met the same problem when he ran TBS 6981 on windows 7 media center, luckily, he found an additional single transponder scan using the following settings:

Carrier Frequency 10847 MHz
Symbol Rate 23000 kSymbols/s
Polarization Vertical

With the second try, he found two new channels. However, it’s still far away from satisfactory. All efforts are devoted to solve this problem. A smart guy said The Hauppage Tuners require a DVB-S2 patch for W7 MC to receive the BBC, ITV HD and C4 HD channels. So it would possibly apply to the TBS 6981 tuner. Good idea and offer us a new way to get through the question. Now some user can receive the channels ok but still getting quite a lot of blocking (pixilation) on the S2 channels format

Of course, TBS support team is still keeping an eye on this issue. You could read the original thread here http://www.buydvb.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=454

If you have any other improvements or questions, post it in the forum or write directly to TBS technology support. Any suggestions and bug reports are welcome. We will try our best to offer the first class quality and best service for our customers.

What do the customers review for TBS 6984 quad tuner card?

It just works great with my window7 media center

By Richard, W

I’ve had this quad tuner about 3 days from TBS’s official store. And I can say, it just works – and it works well with my window 7 media center. – It’s really what TBS can do this. With the PCI express slot available, it is very easy to setup the card on pc. Running Win7 media center on an I7 homebuilt HTPC, the card doesn’t seem particularly problematic with incoming signals. Before this, I have downloaded the driver for windows from attaching CD. As TBS refers, this quad card is also compatible with the Linux system. But I haven’t tried. I was deeply impressed by the scan speed of the TBS 69841, which only took three and a half minutes to scan the satellite I want. Every search can be restricted to free-to-air channels only, which is particularly helpful as the PC card does not come with a CI slot for pay TV reception. The most important is we’ve had all 4 channels when the busy several times !We now watch basically all the satellite TV on PC, and between recording shows, – Support has been good from TBS and all it all, while pricey, this card is WELL WORTH IT, if you want HD in your PC– Long awaited, and an excellent product!!

Unreal experience… if you own an HTPC, you need this card

By Ivan

I built an HTPC four years ago. At the time, the only option to get HDTV in Windows Media Center was use a TV tuner card. Most of them are single tuner. There is a rare of quad tuner tv card. I was one of the first people to receive this quad card. I must say, this is the best tv tuner card I have ever used, Without question, this card is unbelievable! It is SIMPLE to install the card. Further, assuming you have a satellte technician who has any experience, it is easy to set up in Windows Media Center. I am so pleased that this quad tuner records 4 shows at one time without any problems.

The price is Ok for me .just look at it as an investment. It’s an investment in sanity as there are no more battles over what gets recorded. It’s an investment in technology because my system can do things that a single or dual tuner tv cards could never accomplish.

Awesome and perfect!Absolutely Five stars.
